The Ponemon Institute revealed brand new research today at SecureWorld St. Louis, Day 1, on how organizations are securing the internet of things.

Dr. Larry Ponemon delivered the opening keynote.

"One of the challenges in this area is that many IoT devices are really not capable of strong encryption and similar high-security measures, many can only handle basic security."

Top 5 ways organizations are securing IoT devices

Ponemon revealed 2018 research on the top 5 things companies report doing to secure the internet of things within the organization:

  1. Continuous monitoring of network traffic for each IoT device to spot anomalies
  2. Network access controls
  3. Real-time solutions to stop IoT activity that is identified as compromised or malicious
  4. Peer group IoT device comparison to spot anomalies
  5. Tools to prove compliance requirements have been met

Ponemon also pointed out that most organizations implementing extra security around the IoT typically only focus on specific IoT devices and not everything within the corporate network.

Additionally, Ponemon's research shows that the 6th highest response about how companies secure the IoT is this:

"No additional security beyond what is provided by the manufacturer."

And given what we know about the bolt-on security mentality of many IoT devices, the IoT landscape remains quite hopeful for hackers and cyber bad actors.
