Cyberattacks, specifically ransomware attacks, continue to cause havoc in different aspects of our everyday lives.
Within the last month, we have seen an attack on Colonial Pipeline, creating gas shortages all over the eastern United States.
We have seen an attack on JBS Foods, the world's number one beef and poultry producer, causing operations to come to a halt.
And now, we are seeing an attack on Massachusetts Steamship Authority, which is a ferry service that visits Martha's Vineyard, Woods Hole, and Nantucket.
These three attacks against different industries have one thing in common: the power to disrupt daily life in some way.
Massachusetts Steamship Authority hit with ransomware
The company's website, which would normally be showing information about the company and how to book a trip, currently looks like this:
There is nothing on the website, nothing to click on, only this brief message.
The company also took to Twitter to share what little information it could about the ransomware attack:
A team of IT professionals is currently assessing the impact of the attack. Additional information will be provided upon completion of the initial assessment. 2/2

Since the initial tweet, the company has provided an update on the situation, noting scheduled trips will continue to operate as normal:
There is no impact to the safety of vessel operations, as the issue does not affect radar or GPS functionality. Scheduled trips to both islands continue to operate, although customers may experience some delays during the ticketing process. 2/4

The company also assures that customers who have existing registrations will be fine, and that it is preferring cash for transactions due to the cyberattack affecting some its systems:
If traveling with the Authority today, cash is preferred for all transactions. The availability of credit card systems to process vehicle and passenger tickets, as well as parking lot fees, is limited.

Additional information will be provided as it becomes available. 4/4
This attack on Massachusetts Steamship Authority is just another reminder that no one, no industry, it out of reach of cybercriminals.
