It's a cybersecurity seal of approval that gives online shoppers a sense of trust in the website they are buying from.

You may have seen this Trusted Site notification from Best of the Web while browsing:

cybersecurity-seal-compromised

However, the seal itself was apparently compromised in a recent cyberattack revealed May 13, 2019, by security researcher Willem de Groot:

A cybersecurity and privacy seal of approval that contains keyloggers? Yes, you read that correctly.

Best of the Web responded that it has now taken care of the problem.

Irony exists in cybersecurity and privacy

Best of the Web is not the only cybersecurity related company to experience something like this. And in some cases, the irony is much worse.

Like the time Hackers Hit a 'Secure Email' Company, Wiping Out Database.

And there was plenty of irony when this Hacking Website Got Hacked, and all kinds of security and privacy ironies in the 10 Funniest Tweets About #GDPRday in Europe.

And how can we forget the ironic letter about regulating medical IoT devices:

In a letter to the FDA on ways the agency could reduce regulatory burdens for U.S. hospitals, the American Hospital Association asked for more FDA oversight for someone else.

Irony sometimes pops up where we least expect it in cybersecurity.

And when it does,we tend to hear about it in a conference keynote or session somewhere on the North American continent.
