A few days ago, Facebook announced that at least 50 million user accounts were impacted by a new security breach.

Step 1: Facebook announces the new breach

Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg even posted an update on Facebook about it:

News traveled around the world in seconds, as we expect these days.

Step 2: Facebook blocks postings of The Guardian report on breach

But here's the surprise: When others went to share The Guardian's story about the Facebook breach on Facebook, the social media outlet blocked it as spam:

Step 3: Facebook blocks AP article on the Facebook breach

And others noticed an Associated Press article on the Facebook breach was also being blocked by Facebook.

Step 4: Facebook responds to blocking stories on its breach

Tech writer Kate Conger pointed out the blocked articles to Facebook and actually got a response, which is impressive:

It is a little ironic that Facebook saw posts about its latest 2018 breach as fake news, isn't it? However, it does make sense from a sheer big data point of view. Really, really big data.

So it does seem like there's a logical explanation for the blocked articles that are now going through. Although, not everyone on Twitter seems to buy the reasoning:

It's certainly been a crazy few days for Facebook.

Facebook's crazy 72 hours

First, Facebook forces 90 million users to log back in, then it blocks news of the breach on its own site.

While this is happening, a hacker cancels plans to delete Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook page in a live stream event. So at least that's a win.

However, at the same time, the man who is credited with creating the modern internet announced plans to develop a new internet that will take power from tech giants like Google and Facebook and return it to the people.
