Only 52% of business representatives expect that a cybersecurity incident will occur, and that they need to be prepared for it.

Even worse, 55% think that their incident response plans are good to go and don’t need room for improvement.

In a recent study from Kaspersky Labs, 4,000 business representatives from 25 countries were surveyed on their perceptions of their organization’s IT security.

According to their results, the top concern for IT security is protecting company data. Of the ten threat categories surveyed, six of them are directly related to growing fears of data loss.

Surprisingly, 54% of businesses cite properly addressing BYOD threats as their number one concern, followed by the physical loss of mobile devices with company data.

Companies seem to be most secure in fighting off malware that will simply disrupt productivity, but are highly concerned with attacks targeting their organization specifically. However, based on what businesses have actually experienced, malware and physical property loss are the top threats.

Also a huge problem in reality for organizations is employee carelessness. Almost 1 in 5 companies report this as the reason for a serious data breach.

“In small businesses without dedicated IT personnel, it is often the case that staff have to implement cybersecurity themselves - for example, by installing free antimalware solutions with limited functionality,” said Vladimir Zapolyansky, head of SMB marketing at Kaspersky Lab in a press release. “This poses major risks for a company because one employee’s carelessness can easily affect all data within the organization - leading to instant losses in time, clients’ data and money’. Businesses should implement solutions specifically designed for small and medium-sized businesses, with protection that any IT administrator, even with low IT skills, can easily maintain from everywhere.”

Kaspersky Labs reports that they are confident that “99% of security threats can be repelled by highly efficient, automated, intelligent software technologies” with the final 1% composing of a new mindset.

Whatever the solution, aligning your perception of threats facing your company with what’s actually attacking will help you discover where your security plan is lacking.
