We've been hearing from our Advisory Council members all year that they are attempting to make security personal, so that healthy cyber habits follow employees to work.

With Cyber Monday just days away, here's a timely chance to make security personal again.

And these are also great tips to share with your extended family on Thanksgiving. Even if they're still not sure what you actually do while working in "cybersecurity."

We paraphrased some tips from the National Cyber Security Alliance, and you can easily copy and paste the tips below into an email for company employees.

Top 5 tips for Cyber Monday and safe holiday shopping online

1. LOOK for the LOCK: In the upper left of your web browser window, look for the lock icon. This is your sign the website has taken extra steps to secure itself, which also helps you.

 2. When IN DOUBT, throw it OUT: Links in emails, posts, and texts are often the ways cybercriminals try to steal your information or infect your devices.

3. Spend 30 seconds on RESEARCH: When using a new website for purchases, read reviews and see if other consumers have had a positive or negative experience with the website.

4. Create POWERFUL PASSWORDS: A lot of shopping sites will ask you to create a username and password or reset your password if you've forgotten it. When you do, know that a strong password is a sentence that is at least 12 characters long. Focus on positive sentences or phrases that you like to think about and are easy to remember (for example, “I love country music.”). On many sites, you can now use spaces.

5. Keep a CLEAN MACHINE: Keep all software on internet-connected devices—including computers, smartphones, and tablets—up to date. This reduces the risk of infection from malware that can harm or hijack your machine. This is because most updates now include patches to fix cybersecurity flaws hackers would like use.
